A Pet Parent’s Guide to CBD
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant! Industrial hemp has high quantities of CBD. There are many bone-a-fide benefits to giving your pet CBD including calming anxiety, easing nausea, reducing inflammation, and much more! All CHEMDAWG’S pet products are hemp-infused or use hemp-derived CBD. Rest assured CBD does not produce psychoactive effects in your pet.
What does hemp-infused mean?
Hemp-infused means the product has barkworthy ingredients, like hemp meal, hemp seed oil, hemp oil, or CBD isolate.
What is the difference between hemp and marijuana?
With hemp, your pet will get those tail-wagging benefits without the “high.” Hemp and marijuana are both cannabis plants; the difference is the amount of THC. The 2018 Farm Bill defines hemp as having 0.3% THC or less while marijuana has more.
Are CHEMDAWG’S products just for dogs?
Not at all! Our treats and food are designed with doggos in mind, but all products may help other pets reduce inflammation, calm anxiety, ease nausea, and much more!
Will CBD get my pet high?
In short, no! CBD may help calm your pet, but as a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, your pet will not experience a “high.” CHEMDAWG’S products always have less than 0.3% THC.
How does CBD work on my pet?
CBD may help your pet calm anxiety, relieve pain, increase mobility, and more by interacting with your pet’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which maintains homeostasis, or balance, in their body. The ECS also plays a vital role in regulating responses to pain, inflammation, and appetite among other things. Like humans, most animals have an ECS, even sea urchins!

How do I know how much CBD to give my pet?
Refer to the specific dosage recommendations on the product packaging. Labels can also be viewed on the website. We recommend starting with a low test dosage and working up to a higher dosage to achieve the desired effects. Cats often require a higher dose as they don’t have as many endocannabinoid receptors.
What is the best way to give CBD to my pet?
CBD is available for your furry friend in tinctures, treats, and dog food, so you can choose which works best for your dog. As you introduce CBD into your pet's diet, we recommend starting with a low dose and gradually increasing the amount as needed to see the desired effects. Bone appétit!
How do I know when to give my pet CBD?
You know your pet best! When and how often you choose to give your pet CBD is up to you, but we're happy to share some tips. If you are seeking benefits for short-term situations, like calming your pet during a thunderstorm or easing anxiety while moving or traveling, your pet will benefit from taking CBD 30 minutes to an hour before you would like to see the effects. For more long-term benefits with issues like severe separation anxiety, digestive issues, and inflammatory conditions, we recommend integrating CBD into your pet’s daily routine. Many pets benefit the most from using CBD regularly, so when emBARKing on this new routine, we recommend using CBD during mealtime.
Pawsitively Safe
Can my pet overdose on CBD?
No, studies indicate pets cannot overdose on CBD. If your pet takes too much CBD, the most common side effect is drowsiness, and your pet will recover after catching some z’s.
Can I give my pet CBD if they’re on medications?
If your pet is on medication, we recommend consulting your veterinarian prior to starting them on any CBD routine.
How long will the results last?
Lasting results of CBD will vary based on your pet’s weight, the amount of CBD given, and the frequency it is given. All our furry friends are unique, and the way CBD interacts with their endocannabinoid system is different. CBD typically takes about 30-45 minutes to take effect and results can last anywhere between 4-6 hours.
Is CBD safe for pets with food allergies?
AB-SO-LUTLEY! While our treats are specifically designed to appeal to dogs, almost all animals have an endocannabinoid system, meaning they can benefit from hemp seed oil and CBD too! For cats and other pets, we recommend trying our tinctures. Remember, cats may need a higher dose as they don’t have as many endocannabinoid receptors as dogs.
